Untold story of the KETTARAS

On the margins of the Sahara Desert, the isolated oases of the Draa River valley and Tafilalt have relied on qanat (locally khettara) water for irrigation since the late 14th century. In Marrakech and the Haouz plain, the qanats have been abandoned since the early 1970s, having dried up. In the Tafilaft area, half of the 400 Khettaras are still in use.

A remote corner of the Tafilalte desert , an ancient mystery , enigmatic stone structures, scattered across the top flattened round mountain in the middle of desolate desert. Enter the Anti Atlas Mountains that stretches as far as the eye can see. Marvel at ochre-streaked sandstone canyons and lunar plateaus of black volcanic stone. Massive boulders rise from out of the earth , chiselled by the wind into works of art .Amidst this wild and enigmatic landscape , camels, gazelles and more exotic flora and fauna thrive. A lush oasis of Ait mansour also thrives, green canopies of a palm grove offer coolness and shelter, and the air is perfumed with the scent of dates, Almonds , Argane , and mint. This oasis is the heart of the Anti Atlas Mountains , and has nourished life here for millennia, inviting the Souss Berbers to settle here and develop their rich and varied cultures.

VISIT AN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM IN THE HEART OF THE DESERT

Sijilmassa sites tell of ancient times, when civilizations flourished in its lush oases. A trading route hub, it was Criss–crossed by caravans loaded with gold , incense, spices, beads, glazed ceramics and more, its mountains echoing with the music of different tongues. Zagoura was the  principal Moroccan southern city, where the elite buried their dead in elaborate Holly men  tombs. Important information is being discovered about water management and agriculture practices from the ancient city of Zagoura , in new, ongoing excavations. At Jabal Agdz , you will find hundreds of ancient written inscriptions describing pilgrimages, rituals and offerings. Morocco  overflows with archaeological riches, and more are discovered every day.
